King receives awards for 4-H involvement

By BRITTNEY MANGUM,

Christy King was recently given two awards for the  4-H program in Clarke County.

She was given the Overall State Program Award for having the best 4-H program in the state of Mississippi for 2019. Clarke County’s 4-H won the award for its abundance of programs offered to the community.

“We’re not just plows and cows,” said Christy King.

In fact, 4-H has all of the following programs available for the area’s youth to partake in: livestock, shooting sports, ATV safety, cooking, grilling, public speaking, leadership and citizenship, engineering, computers, forestry and wildlife, clothing, and record books. They will also be adding a robot club in 2020.

“This award came as a shock to us,” said Christy King. “There are so many great 4-H programs all over this state, and I know we have a good one, but I never expected for us to get the Overall State Program Award. It is truly an honor to get it.”

Not only did she receive an award issued on the state level, she also received a service award on the national level: the Distinguished Service Award. The Distinguished Service Award is only given to two people each year, and Christy King was one of the two for 2019. The requirements for the award are for the person to have spent at least seven years with the extension service, have a diversity of programs and activities, and have unique programs that go above and beyond the usual programs, such as the county’s Special Needs Livestock Program.

“It is really an honor to receive a national award for the program,” stated Christy. “Our Special Needs Livestock Program and ATV safety have received a great deal of attention in the past years. I’m very proud of what we are doing in 4-H and am thankful and honored to receive the Distinguished Service Award this year.”

The 4-H club has brought about an abundance of economic growth over the years and has gained recognition on both the state and national levels. Over the years, they have received numerous awards highlighting their programs and diversity. They participate in a variety of competitions and make life-long friends in process. Christy King is proud of the 4-H members and how much growth they show from year to year.

The 4-H group is doing great things, and will most likely continue to receive prestigious awards like these in the years to come.
