Primary Election Results

The Primary Election held August 6 brought about a change in one office. Troy Smith, current Clarke County Supervisor, beat Incumbent William Shirley in the race for House District 84. Smith had 72.95% of the votes statewide to Shirley’s 27.05%. Smith will face Independent Coley Roy May in November.

Lauderdale County candidate Jeff Tate beat out Clarke County candidate Erle “Bubby” Johnston in the State Senate District 33 race with 83.90% of the statewide vote compared to Johnston’s 16.10% of the vote. Tate is the winner of the seat with no opponent in November.

There will be two runoffs on August 27 statewide, Governor – Republican, and Attorney General – Republican.

For Governor - Republican, Tate Reeves received 48.91% of the vote and Bill Waller 33.33%.

For Attorney General – Republican, Lynn Fitch received 44.28% of the vote and Andy Taggart 28.58%.

If there are more than two candidate in a race, one must win 50% plus one of the votes to win the Primary Election. Otherwise, a runoff has to be held before proceeding to the General Election in November. If a person voted in the Primary and choses to vote in the Primary runoff, he/she MUST vote the same party in the runoff.

Only 21.45% of registered voters in Clarke County voted.

Lorenzo Carter 67.71% - WINNER

Tracy McCarty 32.29%

SHERIFF – REPUBLICAN

Jerry Whigham 42.06%

Karey Williams 49.87% - WINNER

SUPERVISOR DISTRICT 3 – REPUBLICAN

Greg Mangum 29.03%

Joel Speed 69.65% - WINNER
