David D. Kelley

David D. Kelley passed away on Monday, November 12, 2018, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease and bone cancer.  Visitation will be Wednesday, November 14, 2018, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Wright's Funeral Home.  Memorial services will be held Thursday, November 15, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at Wright’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ralph G. Francis and Rev. Pam Randall officiating.  Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Quitman, MS. 

David was a graduate of Quitman High School and Mississippi State University.  In high school, he was chosen Mr. QHS, captain of the football team his senior year and selected for Mississippi High School All Star Game.  He entered Mississippi State University on a football athletic scholarship where he received a B.S. degree and M.Ed. degree.  David was co-captain of the football team his senior year and received Honorable Mention in the All-Southeastern Conference Scholastic Team.  David remained an avid fan and supporter of Mississippi State University.  Following his graduating from MSU, David played in the Blue Gray Game.

Mr. Kelley began his teaching career with the Laurel City Schools where he served as a teacher/coach.  After four years, he moved to the Gulfport Public Schools for the next thirty-one years until his retirement.  During his tenure, Mr. Kelley had the opportunity to serve as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, and as a district-wide school administrator. 

Mr. Kelley was active in professional and civic organizations.  He was Gulfport’s Outstanding Young Educator, Outstanding Leader in American Secondary Education, served as one of the chairmen of the Miss USA Pageant 1978 and 1979, chairman for Gulfport High School Key Club, awarded Gulfport Kiwanis Club’s Outstanding President’s Award, and given the MSU Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award 1988.  He was a member of the Bulldog Club and the MSU Development Foundation.  Mr. Kelley was also president of the Harrison County MSU Alumni Association.  He was a member of Quitman First United Methodist Church.  Through the years, Mr. Kelley touched so many lives with his understanding ways and his great faith.

He is survived by his loving, devoted wife of 57 years, Alma Jo Brashier Kelley; sisters Katie Jones, Martha Malone, Kathy Kelly; and brother, Clyde (Geraldine) Kelly; and sister-in-law, Patricia (John) Blanchard.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Norris and Olivia Turner Kelley; brothers, Harvey, Jesse W., Johnnie J., Robert R.Kelly; and sisters, Myra Allen, Esther Diamond, Mylissie Joiner, and Virginia Todd.
