Rev. Arlis V. Nichols

Rev. Arlis V. Nichols, husband, father, pastor, went home to be with his Lord on the afternoon of October 3, 2018 at the age of 87. Bro. Arlis, as he was known to most, was born January 17, 1931 to Macon and Millie Nichols near Baldwyn, Mississippi. In his early years he picked cotton, played mandolin in the family band with his brothers, and began collecting humorous stories of real life in the rural South, with which he entertained and encouraged countless listeners. After graduation from Baldwyn High School, Arlis proudly served in the U. S. Air Force. During that time he also married his sweetheart, Barbara Joann Brown of Enterprise. Following his military service, he attended and graduated from William Carey College in Hattiesburg.

Over his many years of Christian ministry, Bro. Arlis has served churches in central and south Mississippi both as associate minister and senior pastor, in addition to several interim pastorates in retirement. Reflective of his love for young people, Arlis also taught middle school in Clarke County for a number of years, including working for a time as the Drug Education Specialist for the school system.

Perhaps best known for his pastor’s heart, his humor and story-telling, Bro. Arlis brought joy, laughter, and the love of God to many thousands through the decades at banquets, senior adult meetings, conferences, community events or just around the dinner table. He truly lived out the truth of Proverbs 17:22, “A joyful heart is good medicine.”

Arlis was preceded in death by his parents, a sister LaVelle and brother Hollis. He is survived by his wife Barbara, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage. Also surviving is son Mike/Leticia of Hickory, NC and son Kevin/Grace of Cathedral City, CA. He is lovingly missed by grandson Christopher/Alexia, brother Grady/Bonnie, sister-in-law Betty, sister-in-law Judy Speed, a number of nieces and nephews, special neighbors Bryant/Lori Rutledge and Paul/Tina Rutledge, in addition to a multitude of church family and friends.
