Mental health has been a topic of concern over the past few years. Too many people fight various mental health diseases while feeling alone.
In 2005, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline launched the number 1-800-273-8255 for those who are in a suicidal crisis or mental health distress to call and have someone to speak with who may be able to help.
Countless people have been helped through the program, and in 2020, Congress designated a new code to lead to the National Suicide Prevention Line: 988. The easy to remember number was designed to create a direct line for life-saving services for anyone who suffers from mental health or substance use crisis, and people are able to contact the number if they are concerned about someone who may need crisis support.
While the 988 code was designated in 2020, it is only recently that all phone companies are required to route any calls and text messages sent to 988 to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
It is hoped that the new nationally recognized number can provide easier access to receive help. The lifeline is open 24/7 and available to help anyone.
