Just before midnight on Saturday, May 23, Sheriff Anthony Chancelor radioed in and reported that he heard someone fire off 5-6 shots outside his home on Betty Circle in Quitman.
Anthony said, “Just before midnight, I heard 5-6 shots outside of my bedroom window. By the time I made it to the door, a dark colored midsized SUV (possibly a Lincoln) was pulling out of my circle drive and drove north. I immediately notified dispatch, so they could have the PD (City of Quitman Police Department) look for the vehicle.”
Police Chief Chris Read reported that the police department did respond and found no evidence, no other callers reported hearing anything, and no shell casings were found.
Police Chief Read had officers going around to residents’ homes on Sunday morning to see if anyone had any video footage around the time in question. One next door neighbor was able to show footage to police that showed one vehicle that came through during that timeframe. It was a gray SUV that showed the SUV circle three times one after the other.
The officers followed up with the neighbor who was outside at the time with their child on a dirt bike. The dirt bike in question was found to be an electric dirt bike.
Sheriff Chancelor informed the public that the residents in the community are safe. It was an isolated incident where he was the intended target for intimidation.
Sheriff Chancelor said that he is very appreciative of the City of Quitman Police Department’s response time, how they are handling the case, and Police Chief Read.
