Bobby Joe Barton of Stonewall, Mississippi, born November 8, 1932, passed away on March 24, 2024, at Anderson's Hospital in Meridian, MS.
Known as "BJ" to friends and colleagues, and Papaw to his much-adored grandchildren and great grandchildren, he graduated with degrees from Jones Jr. College, University of Southern Mississippi, and two post graduate degrees from Delta State University. He was a coach, educator, and administrator in Mississippi schools, retiring after 30 years of service. He was a proud Army Veteran having served in the 82nd Airborne Division. He was also a long-time member of Quitman, First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.
His family was his pride and joy. He used any opportunity to share memorable stories. He will be greatly missed by his only daughter, Martha Barton May (Mark); grandchildren, Emily May Lequerica (Frank) and Philip Barton May (Lauren); along with three great-grands, May Catherine Lequerica, Harris Barton May, and Camille Martha May. He is also survived by his sister, Lois Oglesby Smith (Jimmy) and his niece, Susan White Taylor (Walter), along with many great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Audrey Harlston Barton; parents, James Melvin Barton, Lottie Shipp Oglesby and stepfather, Raymond Oglesby; brothers, James Oliver Barton, Jerry Barton; sister, Gayle Barton; and four stepbrothers, Ray Oglesby, Billy Oglesby, Eugene Oglesby and Guinn Oglesby.
Visitation will be held Thursday, March 28, 2024, 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Wright's Funeral Home, Quitman, Mississippi.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2024, 2:30 p.m. at the Stonewall Cemetery with Rev. Dennis Coats officiating.
Burial will take place in the Stonewall Cemetery.
