Jones College opened up MACCC play in the right way on Saturday with a sweep at Holmes by 8-3 and 9-3 finals.
The Bobcats improved to 17-5 overall and 2-0 in conference play. They'll host 15th-ranked Hinds at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
Jones 8, Holmes 3
Brice Deaton (Pontotoc) and Kace Matthews (West Jones) combined to strikeout 10 and the Bobcats scored seven unanswered to take the opener.
Jakob Wax (Prairieville, Louisiana) homered to put Jones on the board first in the third.
Later trailing 3-1 after four, Josh Cary’s (Petal) RBI-single pulled the Bobcats within 3-2 in the fifth before Marquette Gibson’s (D’Iberville) bases-clearing triple gave Jones a 5-3 lead in the seventh.
Beau Bryans (Madison Central) put the finishing touches on the Bulldogs with a two-run blast in the ninth.
Deaton scattered seven hits, three runs and four strikeouts in a no-decision over five. Matthews allowed one hit with six strikeouts in four innings to improve to 2-0.
Wax continued his tear at the plate, finishing 4-for-4 with a double, home run and three runs scored. Gatlin Sanders (Madison Central) was 2-for-4 with an RBI-single.
Jones 9, Holmes 3
Colby Tubre (D’Iberville) gave Jones a strong start with seven strikeouts and one run allowed over five innings and the Bobcats never trailed.
Cary scored on a passed ball to give Jones a 1-0 lead after one.
An RBI-single from Tristan Pearson (Biloxi), Wax sac fly and wild pitch extended the lead to 4-0 after four.
Three Bulldog walks, two of them with the bases-loaded to Wax and Chase Honeycutt (DeSoto Central) allowed JC to plate four more in the sixth to make it 9-1.
The top of the Bobcat lineup finished 7-for-18 with three doubles, a triple and all nine runs scored.
Charlee Strickland (Northeast Jones) threw the sixth and Bryans the seventh to close it out.
