The Jones College women’s soccer team has received a prestigious award.
The Bobcats have been awarded the United Soccer Coaches 2023 College Team Ethics and Silver Sportsmanship Award.
Jones was one of only 26 teams to earn the Silver Sportsmanship Award and is the only MACCC team – men or women - to receive the honor.
Bobcat head coach Dolores Deasley said her team was deserving of the award.
“To play with class and hold ourselves to a high standard both on and off the field is something that is preached every day in the life of a Bobcat,” she said. “These girls have represented the program and college with pure class all year long and for that we are extremely proud. It is an honor to be named among only 26 teams in the country to receive this award from the United Soccer Coaches.”
The award is another in a long line of achievements by the 2023 Bobcats.
Jones won its first ever NJCAA Division II national championship in November by going 4-0 in the national tournament in Tucson, Arizona. The Bobcats ended the season with a 17-1-1 record.
In all, 44 men’s and women’s teams received either the Gold, Silver or Bronze version of the College Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award, which recognizes teams that exhibit fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the laws of the game, as reflected by the number of yellow caution cards or red ejection cards they are shown by referees throughout the season based on the number of cards accumulated divided by the number of games played (i.e., 5 cards divided by 20 games played is 0.25 or 25 percent, which qualifies for a Silver Award).
Four teams were recipients of the Gold Award, which is given to teams with a percentage of cards ranging from 1-10 percent.
A total of 26 teams claimed the Silver Award, which is given to teams that accumulate a percentage of cards ranging from 11-30 percent, while the Bronze Award went to 14 teams, which is presented to teams that accumulate a percentage of cards ranging from 31-50 percent.
