“When disaster brings sudden death…” (Job 9:23) Our world is filled with events that garner the sudden attention of the news media. The anchorperson cries out, “Breaking News!” All in hopes of arresting our attention and increasing their viewership. After all, their advertising dollars are calculated by the number of viewers they draw; therefore, breaking news is the carrot before the horse.
We must tune in now to their freak show! Oh really? Should the flagpole of promoting their neurotic news change my attention away from time in God’s Word? Should I remove myself from the garden of delight with Christ to the asinine halls of politicians? Should my quiet reflection upon the goodness of God toward this poor sinner be interrupted by the crazy actions of members of this narcissistic world? Should I set aside my biblical devotions that correct and strengthen my soul, and in turn, look to the breaking news as the all-important topic of inquiry?
I think not. All that breaking news reveals is what I already know—that this world is broken!
From the drug dealers to the corrupt business owners, from crooked crooks to lawless lawmen, from the upper hills of Hollywood to the fools on Capital Hill, from the woke culture that sleeps in the lap of socialistic marxism to the sleeping pillow-prophets among religious leaders, as Christians, we already know the ONE and ONLY answer for this world.
The ‘breaking news’ from this broken world only works to break down our souls even further. The liberal media wants to drive our thoughts into the pit of hopelessness and surrender to their narrative of world events. Satan wants us to believe that things will never change, that mankind is doomed, and that standing for what is right is not worth it. When the world breaks us, it allows their radical philosophies, which they claim offers solutions, to seep into our understanding and slowly move us into believing they have the answers. And if we fall into their philosophy of life, the news breaks us even more.
Rush, rush, rush. Drop all you are doing. Turn on the news. NO! Here is the real “Breaking News.” Regardless of our sins and failures, Jesus Christ stands on the precipice of time and offers forgiveness and eternal life to all who will repent and place their trust in Him. He beckons us to take up our cross and follow Him. Through salvation, Christ offers us peace in the midst of the world’s confusion, clarity in the midst of their discombobulation, light in the midst of their darkness, and hope in the midst of their despair.
God says, “Be Still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10) When we cultivate ‘stillness’ before the Lord, our focus becomes what it should be, our vision and minds become clear, and we see things as God does.
Now that is… Breaking News!
