The State of Mississippi is still under a burn ban with no exemptions. It is important for people to refrain from burning anything, and anyone caught violating the burn ban will be help responsible.
Emergency Management Director Toshia Evans said, “If you see a neighbor or anyone burning, please call the local 911 office.”
According to the Mississippi Forestry Commission website, the local sheriff's office enforces burn bans, and anyone who willfully violates a burn ban is guilty of a misdemeanor and can receive a fine of not less than $100 and not more than $500.
Anything that has an open flame that can produce an ember is not allowed during a burn ban since the wind can carry floating embers away from the original fire and start a fire up to a half-mile away from the original burning area.
The following are strictly prohibited during a burn ban:
• Campfires
• Bonfires
• Fire pits
• Fire rings
• Burn barrels
• Debris burning
• Field burning
Please do not burn anything while the burn ban is in effect.
