Celia Carter Muths, age 87, of Gulfport, passed away on May 3, 2025.
Celia was born in Quitman, MS, on November 1, 1937, to Sam and Mary Terral Carter and graduated from Quitman High School where she was valedictorian of the Class of 1955.
She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Mississippi in 1959. While a student there, she was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, Mortar Board, and Chi Omega Sorority. After her graduation, Celia and Sherman Muths, Jr. were married in August 1959.
As a life member of the Ole Miss Alumni Association, she served on the Board of Directors of both the Alumni Association and the University Foundation, as a national co-chair for the Campaign for Excellence from 1998-2000, and as a member of the Ole Miss Women’s Council on Philanthropy.
Her community involvement includes being a life member of the Gulfport Junior Auxiliary, Four Seasons Garden Club, Millenium Club, and the Chi Omega Alumnae. She was a member and president of both Revelers and Merry Maskers of which she was Queen in 1981.
Trinity Methodist Church had her caring, active service on the Altar Guild, worship committee, and for several years as a substitute organist.
Celia was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Mary Terral Carter; her only sister and brother-in-law, Mary Carter Speed and James T. Speed; and a sister-in-law and her husband, Sybil Muths Favrot and Blair Favrot.
She is survived by her loving, wonderful husband of 66 years, Sherman Muths, Jr; their son, Sherman Muths, III and his fiancé, Michelle Moore; two precious granddaughters, Mary Margaret “Meg” Muths and Isabelle Anne “Izzy” Muths; three nieces, Celia Speed Boisfontaine, Meg Speed Robertson, and Margaret Favrot Cross; and four nephews, Tom Speed, Carter Speed, Stephen Favrot, and Clifford Favrot.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Trinity Methodist Church, 5007 Lawson Ave, Gulfport, MS 39507, The University of Mississippi Foundation, 406 University Ave, Oxford, MS 38655; or the charity of your choice.
Visitation was held on Friday, May 9, 2025, from 10 – 11 a.m. at Trinity Methodist Church, 5007 Lawson Ave, Gulfport, MS 39507. The funeral service was at 11 a.m. in the church sanctuary. Interment was held in Evergreen Cemetery, Gulfport.
