Changes are being made at the sports complex in Quitman to prepare for fall sports this year. Quitman Mayor Chris Reeves provided information about the park at the Board of Aldermen meeting on August 4.
Reeves stated, “The street department and parks department employees have started taking the fence up on the field down there by the tennis court—the big baseball field that we don’t use. We’re going to move the soccer fields down there so soccer and fall baseball don’t conflict. That’ll be the soccer fields down there for the foreseeable future, and they’re working on taking that fence up now.”
They then had Luke Little discuss grant funds that they are working towards on completely renovating the park and providing an update on where they are with the plans and money situation.
Little explained, “We have CDC reports on the City of Quitman, and it specifies the greatest need in Quitman is parks and recreational opportunities. The reason behind that is the lack of facilities is number one and then number two was the biproduct of not having public facilities and recreational opportunities is that it scored maybe one of the highest counties in Mississippi for xyz medical reasons. Basically, we’re showing where it isn’t just Quitman saying we need this. This is the CDC. We’re able to do things like that, and it really helps the case.”
They discussed everything the city would need to do and the deadlines for it.
Once he was finished speaking, a citizen came up to request that the board consider adding pickleball courts to the park as well since it is a growing sport. The mayor did explain that they do plan to include pickleball with the tennis courts when they are able.
