On Monday, August 31, Quitman Mayor Chris Reeves issued the following statement regarding a city employee who was arrested earlier that day:
“Today, August 31, 2026, an employee of the City of Quitman was found to be in possession of narcotics while on duty by QPD. The City of Quitman has a ZERO-tolerance alcohol and drug policy for its employees, and during my administration, this policy will be strictly enforced. As far as the criminal aspect is concerned, it is being handled and investigated by QPD just as it would be for anyone. No other information will be shared regarding this matter as it is a personnel issue and an active criminal investigation. I applaud the Quitman Police Department for actively fighting crime in our city.”
Quitman Police Chief Chris Read explained what happened to lead to the arrest of the employee, who the jail docket reveals to be Ryan Nelson.
“We conducted a traffic stop for a minor infraction,” stated Read. “An officer searched the vehicle and located narcotics. The party responsible was arrested for possession of narcotics/marijuana. The person is no longer employed with the City of Quitman as we have a zero-tolerance policy.”
