School is out, and children all over Clarke County are thrilled to be able to go out and enjoy the summer fun.
With the break come talks of vacations and parents scrambling to find things for their children to do to keep them occupied while they have so much free time. The great news for the families in the area is that Clarke County has plenty of stuff that families are able to participate in this summer to make a great “staycation.”
Instead of staying cooped up in a house, most parents prefer for their children to spend time outside. The county is already blessed with two parks that are known for great camping: Archusa Creek Water Park and Clarkco. Each park is unique and offers different activities or events throughout the year for people to participate in.
Archusa hosts a fireworks display each July that families can come enjoy. They have a variety of campsites and cabins that families are able to stay at and enjoy. There is a playground, they are currently working on more improvements and additions through the help of Citizens of ArchUSA. They have an updated Disc Golf course that is perfect for fun with the family while enjoying a day at the park. There are plenty of perfect locations for picnics and outdoor games.
Clarkco possesses a variety of campsites, cabins, and even TENTRR that families can use to camp in, along with a variety of other activities. They have a splash pad that children love, especially on the hottest days. They have recently worked on their disk golf course and have plenty of hiking opportunities and multiple geocaches that people are able to go out and locate throughout the park. They also have a new pickleball court and newly renovated tennis courts that everyone can come and enjoy.
Along with the parks, citizens are able to make use of the Chickasawhay River. The river offers multiple opportunities for kayaking, floating, boating, fishing, swimming, and even camping along its banks.
There have been parks updated or made all over the county that children can go play in and have picnics.
Each of the local libraries hosts a Summer Reading Program each summer. While they are independent of each other and may not all occur at the same time, they are a great way to provide education and fun during the summer months. Since the different branches hold their summer reading programs at different times during the summer, contact a local library to learn more details about its summer reading program:
Quitman Public Library: 601-776-2492
Enterprise Public Library: 601-659-3564
Pachuta Public Library: 601-776-7209
Churches in the area also have different events taking place that children can take part in. There are multiple Vacation Bible Schools taking place in the county.
Other things that can be done this summer are simply to volunteer and help give back to the community. Children can gather different non-perishable items to place in the Blessing Boxes located in front of the Quitman Police Station or Quitman Public Library. Some of the items they could include would be canned goods, pastas, single serving bowls of macaroni and cheese, etc.
Summertime doesn’t necessarily mean constantly going out and leaving the area. There are things all throughout Clarke County that families can enjoy to make this a great summer!
