It is hard to believe the tenth year anniversary is approaching when Marine Cpl. Dustin Lee was killed in action in Al Anbar, Iraq. Lee’s service dog, MWD 132, Lex was also injured in the attack. If you remember, Lex was later adopted by Lee’s parents, Rachel and Jerome, but Lex passed away five years after he was adopted. Lex was ranked #4 of the top ten military dogs in the United States.
Lee’s mother, Rachel Rich Lisenbee, has requested the board of supervisors and board of aldermen for Enterprise, Stonewall and Quitman, to approve a request for memorial signs to be designated on Highway 513; one in Quitman, Stonewall and Enterprise.
The Board of Supervisors approved the request and the aldermen are expected to approve it as well at their next meeting.
The VFW Post #4982 is in support of this request and will help assist with this project.
One of the supervisors did bring up the fact the county has other servicemen who have been killed in action. VFW Commander J.G. Kufel said that the VFW is in support of all families of the servicemen and those families would need to contact the VFW to make similar requests. Kufel stated they would need permission from the family first.
The only reason I am mentioning this is to dispel any rumors that the local boards are approving this for one serviceman and not the others. That is not true. They are in support of all veterans who have lost their lives. Those family members would need to contact their local VFW if they wish for highway memorial signs to be erected for their serviceman.
