There will be a meeting in December for committee members to address the issue of abandoned, empty and dilapidated buildings and vacant lots that are located in the city.
The public meeting will be Tuesday, December 13th at the Quitman Depot where a presentation from Smart Growth America, a national organization that helps small communities with economic development, will be presented. Committee members will then meet later to begin initiating those plans and putting them into action.
The purpose of this public meeting is to plan ways to best utilize vacant land and property in Quitman. There are many problematic areas in Quitman with abandoned and empty buildings, vacant lots that are overgrown and many areas that are results of urban blight. The local committee, which was initiated by Quitman Mayor Eddie Fulton, will be working with Smart Growth America to help develop ways to improve some of the areas in Quitman that are a complete eye sore with dilapidated buildings and lots.
Over 40% of the land is Quitman is vacant and if something is not done to improve the economic development and grow the city, Quitman will fall victim like many other small towns. Fortunately, the committee is comprised of local people who do not want to see the demise of this town and are willing to help plan and put into the action ways to utilize the city’s best assets, improve residential areas and the downtown area.
The public is encouraged to come to the meeting on December 13th and help be a part of this revitalization project. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Depot in Quitman.
