Donald Trump clearly won in Clarke County during last week’s presidential primary. Even though voter turnout was low, Trump won in every precinct but one; tied in two other precincts with Ted Cruz.
I had the opportunity to go to one of Donald Trump’s political rallies in January when he was on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I didn’t want to let the opportunity pass by without getting a chance to attend a historic presidential rally. There were quite a few Clarke Countians also in attendance at the rally which was packed out beyond seating capacity at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum with the overflow crowd next door at the convention center.
The rally was nothing like what is being portrayed in other cities where protestors are causing problems. The rally on the coast had less than a handful of protestors and security stopped them before they got inside. They were allowed to peaceful protest, but they had to do it near the coliseum entrance on Highway 90.
The crowd at the rally was peaceful and the coliseum had an energy about it that had the crowd riveting and ready for change.
The diverse crowd represented all demographics. It was a very exciting to see people show up at the rally ready to make a change in the leadership of our country. It was exciting to see a large number of young people in attendance that was experiencing the political process for the first time. Donald Trump is a far cry from the typical republican candidate that we’ve have seen and experienced in the past, but he is gathering support far and wide and I think the majority of his supporters are ready for someone to be in office who isn’t scared to speak out and say what many are thinking. Granted, he speaks out and says a lot of things that don’t need to be spoken, but it is refreshing to see that he isn’t a yes man and takes orders from his deep pocket supporters. His pockets are deep enough and lined with green that he doesn’t fall into the category of the other candidates.
I was very surprised to see Dr. Ben Carson endorse Trump. I like Dr. Carson, liked his ideas and liked his policies and I still do not understand why he didn’t receive as much support.
The political process is very daunting and it is frustrating to no end with the constant insults and campaign smears, but I have to say that it is quite refreshing to see a candidate who is as outspoken and politically incorrect as Trump is. Some of the other candidates come across as a wolf in sheep’s clothing and we know all too often there is always a politician from federal down to local level that wears the sheep’s clothing. At least with Trump, you pretty much know where he stands.
