Column by Dr. Ann Hollingsworth
I have usually considered Americans as a whole to have some sense, some patriotism, and some courage. Sometimes things in our country have been tolerated to a point where that can seem doubtful, such as losers that end up in public office, letting Roe versus Wade and other SCOTUS decisions happen while the nation slept. Then folks get pushed to the point of saying “Enough is enough” and they start fighting back – they show that they do still in fact have backbone.
I see this happening now with the Covid mandates and with Pro-Life support for the Mississippi case on abortion before the Supreme Court. I see it with states who refuse to embrace the destructive Common Core in our public schools – unfortunately Mississippi educators have not yet seen that light.
We need to keep our backbones strong. In the realm of bones and joints, these stay well with action. Arthritic body parts actually get better and stay better with use of movement. That is true of our moral fiber backbone as well. The laziness of the Roe vs Wade days led to laziness for same sex marriage, laziness of some high-level leadership standing up for right in a national election, and laziness on even local political actions.
Keeping our backbones strong is an everyday action, not just a case of doing something when the problem sets in. Much of it is taking a stand for what we believe to be right – if enough of us squeak the wheel, it will get the attention to keep the right. Some examples across the nation are to stand up for law enforcement and honor their work, here at home to proudly display our flag, and fuss at our local schools for not doing so.
A good example of local American backbone was a QHS football game several years ago in which politically correct school leadership decided to no longer have an invocation at ball games. When this was announced, a man in the stands stood up and began praying the Lord’s Prayer out loud. Soon he was joined by the rest of the stadium. Maybe a large crowd of us need to march on the local school campuses and re-raise the flag.
