Column by Dr. Ann Hollingsworth
This past Sunday, I had the blessing of being a part of a prayer rally concerning the case from Mississippi at the Supreme Court this week about legalized abortion on demand for nine months of pregnancy. Just as Roe versus Wade brought in the right to kill the unborn, this case could support their right to live.
Abortion touches the issue of right to live in many ways. There is consideration for the life of the unborn and also for the life of the woman who is carrying that baby. The decision really comes down to who the mom thinks is more important to live – her or the baby. For many unwanted pregnancies, a baby would mess up the mom’s life. Her figure would change, she could be embarrassed, her family could be embarrassed, she might have to cease some key school activities, or she might find her circle of friends changing. Abortion gets rid of the embarrassment.
While the issue is not always life or death, how many times do we make decisions giving self more importance than others. A boss promotes someone to satisfy a sense of political correctness rather than for merit or best fit for the job. Hype is continually fed to a whole nation of people about a virus, vaccination, etc. to browbeat the citizens into submission to a certain political party.
As a child, I learned that the secret to having Joy in life was to give priority to Jesus first, Others second, and You (self) last. Who does that anymore and if we did, might we have a more joyful life?
