“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:4) Few actions demonstrate our faith in Christ like caring for others. It is a matter of putting actions to our faith. The early church had to lean strongly upon the community of faith because of the persecution by the Roman Government. It seems our days are headed that way with the godless and anti-Christian leaders we have in Washington. While they line their pockets with the riches of special interest groups and anti-American countries, they continue to lay heavy tax burdens upon the working middle class.
In times such as these, it gives us an excellent opportunity to shine God’s light among the nation. We can be the hands of Christ to those within our circle of fellowship and to our neighbors. In the midst of all the darkness, our light can shine even brighter. Our hearts should constantly look for opportunities the Holy Spirit desires to lead us to. It is our calling.
Years ago, Marty Lacker, one of Elvis Presley’s bodyguards, came to Graceland and gave Elvis an article to read. It was a story about a lady in Memphis who cleaned houses. That is not uncommon; however, this lady was paralyzed from the waist down. Yet, she provided for her family with hard work. Elvis, known for his generosity, told Marty to call the newspaper and find out where the lady lived. Meanwhile, he loaded a couple of his bodyguards up, and they drove to a medical equipment store. They found the most sophisticated and elaborate wheelchair they could find.
Elvis and Sonny West, along with a couple more bodyguards, drove to the lady's home with the wheelchair. Her husband let them in, and they presented her with the wheelchair. She was thrilled with it, and Elvis told her it was the top of the line wheelchair and he wanted her to have it. When she realized it was a gift, all she could do was weep and tell Elvis, “Thank you! It will help me get around while cleaning houses.”
Her family, Elvis, and the bodyguards were all in tears. The lady did not realize it was Elvis. They were so moved by her thankfulness that Elvis and his guys had to leave the house. As they stood outside and wiped the tears from their eyes, Sonny looked at Elvis and said, “Hey boss, that lady did not even know you were Elvis Presley. She had no idea who you were.” Elvis responded, “That is fine. The most important thing is that she now knows that someone cares.”
Helping is not for our name or recognition. It is about demonstrating to others that someone really cares. And this demonstration opens the door for us to share the Gospel. No one cares for our neighbors the way that Jesus does. However, they need to see physical evidence and experience the hands and love of Christ through us. We must let them know that… Someone Cares!
