On Thursday, Sept. 4, Commissioner Charles Busby, Southern Transportation District, presented the Clarke County Sheriff’s Department with a truck to be used for inmate litter removal efforts. For a nominal fee of $1.00, the truck was transferred from the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) to the Clarke County Sheriff’s Department.
“Keeping Mississippi beautiful is truly a team effort, and we are proud to offer our partners in law enforcement the tools needed to help decrease the presence of litter,” said Busby. “This vehicle will allow Clarke County to make greater use of the Inmate Litter Program, which helps instill a sense of pride in inmates by contributing to community improvements and ultimately improves the image of our state for travelers.”
“We’re very appreciative of Commissioner Busby and his willingness to help us out in Clarke County,” said Clarke County Sheriff Anthony Chancelor. “My vehicle budget was cut in half this year, so the donation of this truck is huge for us.”
The Inmate Litter Program is a partnership between MDOT and participating counties that aims to remove litter from state right of ways using inmate labor. Crews of inmates pick up litter on state-maintained highway systems with a deputy supervising work. MDOT furnishes trash bags, safety vests, gloves and advisory signs. The program is one of several ways litter is removed from state highways.
“Millions of taxpayer dollars are spent each year tackling the problem of litter in our state,” said Busby. “Please do your part to keep our state beautiful and save taxpayer dollars by simply putting trash where it belongs.”
