A female inmate at the Clarke County Jail died on Monday according to Chief Deputy Barry White.
“Monday morning just after 7:00, the sheriff’s department was notified about a white female on Old Stagecoach Road in the ditch,” explained White. “The deputies arrived and found a female. She was disoriented, and the ambulance service was notified. The ambulance service came and checked her, and she appeared to be under the influence of something. She was taken to the jail.”
Officers continuously monitored her condition once she arrived at the jail and responded immediately when they found she had become unresponsive.
“The jail staff was checking on her to make sure she was okay throughout the morning,” expressed White. “Around 11:30, an officer checked on her, and she was not responding to officers. EMS personnel were called to the jail, and she was transported to Watkins by ambulance. Then, she was transported to Rush in Meridian where she died.”
Steps are being taken to determine the cause of death now.
“She’ll be sent to Mississippi Crime Lab for an autopsy,” informed White. “They’ll do an autopsy and drug screen and everything on her. We’ll know more about what happened when the autopsy report comes back.”
