Guitarist, singer-songwriter and Americana Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year winner will raise funds to help aspiring teen musicians
Enjoy a great fall evening outdoors with Americana music – and help launch some new musical careers – when singer-songwriter and guitarist Will Kimbrough performs at the Mississippi Arts + Entertainment Experience (The MAX) courtyard on Friday, October 28.
The event is a fundraiser for The MAX Sound of Success program, which brings promising high school musicians from around the state to The MAX for an immersive summer music camp. The concert is from 7:00 pm to 9:00 p.m., and concert goers are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy the show on The MAX Courtyard lawn. There will be a cash bar available. Tickets are $35 for members of The MAX and $45 for nonmembers.
Kimbrough’s music includes rock, blues, gospel, country, folk, and jazz influences. In an interview, he credited “great radio in my hometown of Mobile, Alabama” as his inspiration. He described himself as “a typical late ’70s/early ’80s kid who got exposed to great rock ’n’ roll and got to play in bands when kids were real excited about seeing bands.”
He became a regional star as a founding member of Will & the Bushmen, a popular club and college band in the 1980s and early ’90s. He has since had songs recorded by Jimmy Buffett, Little Feat, Todd, Snider, Jack Ingram, and Gretchen Peters, among others. He has also produced recordings by Buffett, Snider, Doug Seegers, Radney Foster, and Steve Poltz.
Now living in Nashville, Kimbrough is a member of the bands Willie Sugarcapps and DADDY. He also records and tours with Red Dirt Boys, Emmylou Harris’ touring band. In fact, Kimbrough will be back in Meridian performing with Emmylou Harris and Red Dirt Boys for a sold-out show at the MSU Riley Center in December.
Musicians rave about his guitar skills. He also plays mandolin, banjo, ukulele, accordion, and harmonica, among other instruments. The Americana Music Association named him Instrumentalist of the Year in 2004.
