Funeral services for Mr. Ernest Lovid Roberts of Melvin, AL, were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 20, 2025, at Phillips Funeral Home in Gilbertown, AL, with Reverend Sammy Taylor officiating. Visitation was held for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment followed in the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Melvin, AL.
Mr. Roberts was born January 29, 1935, in Chapell Hill, AL. He passed away Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Regency Hospital in Meridian, MS.
Mr. Roberts was a man of many interests. He enjoyed fishing, squirrel hunting (with pistols), raising horses, chickens, pheasants, white doves, quail, and some forgotten species. He was a jelly maker and an excellent cook. He was a family man and enjoyed his time spent with family and grandchildren. He had a big heart when it came to his garden; he shared his produce with the whole neighborhood. He was a charter member of the Melvin Volunteer Fire Department. He was community minded; he could often be found helping people in the community with repairs around their houses. In the days before there was an ambulance service, he was a self-appointed transporter of sick folks to their doctors or the hospital. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army. An interesting thing about his service was that he went through boot camp with Elvis Presley and got to know him on a personal basis.
He is survived by his wife, DuAnne Roberts of Melvin, AL; sons, Mark Roberts (Angela) of Barrytown, AL, and Cleve Roberts (Laurie) of Meridian, MS; daughter, Robbie Tyson (Lamar) of Theodore, AL; ten grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gordon Lee Roberts; mother, Josephine Elizabeth Taylor Roberts; brother, Harry Richard Roberts; and sister, Louise R. Hare.
Serving as pallbearers were Landrum Roberts, Lyrick Roberts, Cody Goodman, Austin Liveoak, Drew Sims, and Chad Roberts. Honorary pallbearers included Bryant Lee Napier, Richard Johnson, Wayne Roberts, and Les Roberts.
