Veterans will tell you that the military is like a family in many ways, and for me, the saying always went that “the Army takes care of its own.” Each branch of the military has a set of values that they abide by, especially with each other. As we celebrate Veterans Day, I pledge anew these values to my fellow veterans, Army and otherwise:
Loyalt. Bear true faith and allegiance to the U.S. Constitution, the Army, your unit and other Soldiers. This applies outside of the military also as we are faithful and have allegiance to our families, communities and nation.
Duty. Fulfill your obligations. – this goes for family work, community, friends, etc. These are things like keeping promises, and meeting expectations at work, with family, church, etc.
Respect. Treat people as they should be treated. The Golden Rule applies to do unto others as you would like for them to do unto you.
Selfless Service. The military says to “put the welfare of the nation, the Army, and your subordinates before your own.” – now it is to put the welfare of family, friends, community, etc. before my own.
Honor. Do what’s right- legally and morally; every day, create an environment where those whom you associate with can be all they can be; treat others as you’d want to be treated.
Integrity. As long as you do what you’re supposed to do and you do it well, you’re going to be okay.
Personal Courage. Face fear, danger, or adversity (physical or moral).
I do feel a special affinity for my fellow veterans with these values, and I realize that these are good values to practice with everyone. It would be good if we took this and other examples from the military that are good ways to live.
