For months now, kids from all over the county have been diligently working with and caring for a variety of animals with 4-H. They’ve had to take on the responsibility and challenge of making sure the animals have plenty of feed and water, washing the animals, and working with them to train them to go and stand where they need them. Their hard work pays off and is shown at its fullest when they take the animals to show. With the upcoming Clarke County 4-H Show and Sale on January 14, some members have given a brief glimpse of what animals they plan to show and why they enjoy doing it.
Gus Bentley
For four years now, Gus Bentley has made his way through different shows.
Like his brother and sister, Gus also enjoys showing cattle and goats. While he likes all of his animals, he does have a preference for which one is easier.
“I like showing the cows the most because they’re easier to set up and walk,” stated Gus.
While he finds getting the steers to walk again once they’ve stopped to be difficult, he can also see where he has improved with it over the years.
“I’ve gotten better at walking mostly since I started,” said Gus. “I need to work on setting them up a little more.”
The judges in previous shows have noticed his skills in the past.
“I’ve won some shows before,” recalled Gus. “I won goat showmanship at district last year.”
As much as he loves the animals, there is something else that Gus enjoys about being in the livestock show that he is looking forward to.
“My favorite thing about showing livestock is seeing some friends I made a few years ago,” declared Gus.
