QHS senior Jalen Nixon has been awarded for his AP Physics classwork by the MS Advanced STEM Access Program. He attended the MLK ’22 Advance STEM Winter Program hosted by the Global Teaching Project and the Mississippi Public School Consortium for Educational Access. This event was held Friday, January 14th, at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and Saturday, January 15th, at the Engineering Building on the campus of Jackson State University. A program on Friday evening featured a talk by Civil Rights veteran, Velma Benson Wilson, and awards were presented to two students that showed an exceptional dedication to learning.
Jalen was honored with a plaque for his dedication and exemplary commitment to the pursuit of academic excellence in the Mississippi Advanced STEM Access Program. Only two students in the state received this award. Mr. Matt Dolan, CEO of Global Teaching Project, said that “Probably the most important thing you can learn about in our class is dedication, commitment, focus, and these are traits these two students exemplified and demonstrated in abundance.
Jalen’s extraordinary dedication to his studies was evident last year when he remained focused on his studies amidst the disruptions caused by the pandemic. Jalen was extremely conscientious about attending regular zoom Physics classes implemented in response to those disruptions, even though attendance was not required, and he had many other demands on his time. Jalen is continuing in the Global Teaching Initiative program with Computer Science, and he says, “I am thankful for the opportunity to be one of the first students from Quitman to go through this program.” Jalen strongly encourages everyone to get involved in the programs that the Global Teaching Project has to offer.
