The Lauderdale County Foster Grandparent Program, which is sponsored by Multi-County Community Service Agency and serves in Lauderdale County, Clarke County, Kemper County, and Jasper County, recently showed the residents of Diversicare in Quitman a little love by bringing different needed items to gift the residents with.
Although the grandparent program typically works with kids, they decided to do something for the older generation as a way to help celebrate the country’s 250th birthday.
“This is one of our community projects that we’re doing in recognition of the 250th birthday of the United States,” explained Sabrina Wilson, coordinator for the Lauderdale County Foster Grandparent Program. “AmeriCorps Seniors, which is our federal organization, asked us to do something outside of what we normally do, which is working with children with special or exceptional needs, to show recognition and awareness for the birth of our country. We decided to address the needs for nursing homes in our four counties that we serve, and Diversicare is the nursing home that was selected for Clarke County. I spoke with Ms. Winnie Donald here and got her to give me a list of items that were needed and shared that list with volunteers.”
Needed items were donated by volunteers with the organization as well as different businesses and churches, including the Bonita WalMart, Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Meridian, and Greater Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Meridian.
Smiles covered the faces of residents as they talked and laughed with volunteers and received their gifted items.
