I, Matthew Skidmore, would like to announce my candidacy for Quitman School Board of Trustees, Place 4. This is to fill the position vacated by Wendell Carney for his term expiring December 31, 2019.
Both of my daughters are graduates of Quitman High School. My wife is a former employee of Quitman School District and I have worked as a bus driver for the district for numerous years. I am also a business owner in Quitman and have been for the past 17 years and have lived in Clarke County for 31 years. For these reasons, I understand the importance of having a strong school system in our community and I want to work with the school staff to ensure fair, no-nonsense running of the school. I am not a politician, but I have a no backdown attitude. I know that we have a great staff at our schools and I want to ensure they are supported in their work.
I have served on the board of directors for Chickasawhay Natural Gas and this experience has offered me the opportunity to understand the role of board members. I want to be an active, hands-on board member and work to drill down on the issues facing our teachers and students. I seek to serve to make a positive difference and to stay in touch with what is needed to prosper our school.
As a business owner, I know our schools play a pivotal role in allowing us to attract industry to our area. I also understand community support of the school is needed. I don’t believe in keeping the truth from the public but instead, believe in order to build these relationships the public must understand the decisions made by the school. I plan to work diligently to provide the needed information to the community.
I’m not an eloquent speaker or a snazzy dresser, but I am a truth-seeking individual who cares about our school and its community. I will work to ensure that what is done is what is best for the school, staff, students, and the community.
