Law enforcement officers were busy Saturday afternoon as they ended up pursuing seventeen-year-old Desman Roberts and nineteen-year-old Kenneth Warren in a high speed chase.
The ordeal didn’t originally start in Stonewall.
“Around mid-afternoon on Saturday, we had an incident on Highway 513 near the Mackenzie Apartments,” explained Chief Deputy Barry White. “It ended up being an aggravated assault issue. They left that residence and went to Stonewall to another home there on Woodland Drive inside the city limits. While that was going on, the first victim was calling 911 and telling dispatch what happened. By the time they got to Stonewall, somebody else saw them at a house and gave a description of the car and called the officer that was working in Stonewall.”
From there, a pursuit developed involving Stonewall Police Department, the Clarke County Sheriff's Department, and Quitman Police Department.
“As she was responding to that, dispatch was giving out the information to the other units,” continued White. “She saw the car in Briarwood, in the subdivision around Woodland Drive and Ponderosa. She saw the car and tried to make a traffic stop. The chase started from that subdivision and went all the way down Quitman at a high rate of speed. They reached about 101 at the highest speed. They ended up behind the Mexican restaurant on Thompson around Stokes Circle.”
Once the chase ended, both suspects were able to be taken into custody and evidence collected.
“A firearm was recovered, and other evidence pertinent to the case was recovered,” informed White. “A nineteen-year-old and seventeen-year-old were taken into custody. The seventeen-year-old will be charged as an adult.”
The two teenagers were taken into custody without incident, and nobody was hurt during the chase. The case will be presented at the next Grand Jury.
On Monday, April 8, both suspects were brought before Judge Bonner who set their bonds.
Desman Roberts was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and given a $20,000 bond. Kenneth Warren was charged with felony fleeing: following too closely, reckless driving, speeding, disregard for a traffic device, no turn signal, and no seatbelt and was given a $10,000 bond.
