Clarke County law enforcement recently made an arrest in a high speed pursuit that entered the county.
Deputies acted quickly after receiving the call and were able to safely end the chase and detain the suspect.
“On Friday afternoon, we were notified that the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office was in a high speed pursuit on Highway 45 South, and they were within five to eight minutes of being in Clarke County,” explained Sheriff Anthony Chancelor. “The initial call came out to Lauderdale that there was suspicious activity and that the car could possibly be stolen. Deputy Andy Lafferty was able to set up near County Road 150 on a bridge and was able to set up and deploy spike strips on the vehicle. For a potential fail safe, Deputy Don Moore was able to set up approximately a mile and a half south of that location in the event that Deputy Lafferty was unsuccessful; however, Deputy Lafferty’s spikes were successful. The tires on the vehicle, which was a black Honda Accord, were compromised, and the individual came to a stop on the southbound side of 45 just north of the County Road 140 overpass. The gentleman was travelling by himself, and he was taken into custody by myself and Lauderdale County deputies without incident.”
Lauderdale County is currently investigating the events that took place before the pursuit began.
Chancelor is proud of how effective his deputies have been not only with this high speed chase, but also other chases that have come through the county in the past few weeks.
“Our deputies did a great job of bringing this case to a close without anyone getting hurt and without damaging any equipment,” declared Chancelor. “That’s ultimately what our goal is—is to bring situations like this to a close without any incident whatsoever. That’s our goal, and they were accomplished. I’m proud of their actions that day. This is the second high speed pursuit that has made its way into our county in the past three weeks, both of which came to a safe ending where the suspects were apprehended without incident. I would like to credit the training of our deputies as well as Lauderdale County deputies.”
