Mrs. Jewel Hamrick Lawson, a very special and hardworking lady and the matriarch of her family, passed away on February 28, 2026, at the age of 88.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Freeman Lawson; her daughter, Deborah Lawson Satcher; her son, Keith Lawson; her grandson, Christopher Lindsey; her parents, Harmon Hamrick and Lula Hamrick Parnell; and her stepfather, William “Bill” Parnell. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Floyd Hamrick; her nephews, Ricky Hamrick and Danny Hamrick; and her niece, Elaine Taylor Holifield.
Jewel was born on November 3, 1937, and was a lifelong resident of Stonewall, Mississippi. She was a lifelong member of Stonewall Assembly of God Church. She attended and graduated from Stonewall School, where she walked to school uphill both ways—sometimes barefoot, weather permitting.
Jewel lived a simple country life devoted to raising her children—and later her grandchildren and great-grandchildren—tending her garden and cattle and keeping a meticulous yard. If you could persuade her to stop working or cleaning long enough to sit still, she would share stories of growing up without electricity or indoor plumbing, washing clothes on a washboard, childhood memories from the Great Depression, and how she met her husband when he carpooled home from the Army with her brother, Tommy Lee.
As the only daughter, Jewel spent many childhood days helping her mother with household chores such as cooking, cleaning, and quilting. She carried with her the treasured stories of family members who had passed on, along with the “secrets” behind the beloved family recipes we all enjoyed.
Many will remember Jewel for her more than 30 years of dedicated service at Quitman Knitting Mills.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Lindsey; her adopted daughter, Brandy Stallings; her grandchildren, Chasity Hamburg, Tammy Gipson and husband, Michael, Amanda Satcher, Kadin Potts, Miley Stallings, Clorah Stallings, and Sandra Stallings; 13 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Tommy Lee Hamrick; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A celebration of her life was held on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Stonewall Cemetery with Reverend Ed Shoemaker officiating.
