Imagine how nice it would be if Quitman had a sports bar where you could go on a Friday or Saturday evening and watch the baseball, basketball, football or other games on a big screen TV with your family and friends while sharing a picture of your favorite draft or bottle of beer, eating a burger and fries, steak or chef salad, and enjoying the revelry of fans. It would simply be great!
Yet Clarke County is dry. Prohibition was repealed with the passage of the Twenty-first Amendment to the United States Constitution on December 5, 1933. Imagine how much tax revenue has been lost in those 83 years and how much will continue to be lost every year that Clarke County remains dry. And imagine the improvements that have been lost by not having those tax dollars.
Invite your friends and neighbors, your priest, minister and church members. Invite everyone! And ask them all to sign a petition to have a referendum to vote on the issue come this November when we vote for a new President.
In fact, I think everyone who wants to vote on this issue should petition Clarke County to put the matter up for a vote in November. It is high time we the people of Clarke County can have a drink, party at a local sport bar on the weekend, or just sip a glass of good wine while dining out without being criminals.
I encourage everyone who has a restaurant, grocery store or other business that would benefit from selling alcoholic beverages to get signatures from customers petitioning Clarke County to have a referendum in November. Let's put this on the ballot so that then we may give a toast to whoever becomes the next President of the United States.
Sincerely,
TerryLynch
