Memorial services for Andrew Welborn Hurt, 62, of Long Beach, will be at 12 noon on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at Harmony Baptist Church, 5357 Hwy. 18 West in Quitman. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 12 noon, followed by the service.
Following the service, interment will take place at Waynesboro Cemetery in Waynesboro.
Part of the Hurt family that was the longest tenured owners of The Wayne County News, he was a native of Waynesboro. He earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Ole Miss and a master’s degree in mass communications from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY.
He was employed by USA Today in Washington, D.C., where he earned many awards for his writing. Upon leaving USA Today, he then moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and worked as a Media Director with the Ad Group, where he was employed until his death.
Being an Ole Miss Alum, he never missed the Rebels play. He was also a huge Saints fan and enjoyed golf, playing in many charity events.
He enjoyed and loved being with people and was a great friend to many.
He died on Sunday, January 14, 2024.
He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Kim Hurt; his mother, Jewel Hurt; his children, Erin Cooke of Mobile, AL, and Cecelia Thomas of Gainesville, FL; and his grandchildren, Luke Cooke, Nora Cooke and Gabrielle Cooke.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter H. Hurt III.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
Riemann Family Funeral Home in Long Beach was in charge of arrangements.
