John Parkman Slay, 78, of Quitman, Mississippi, passed away on March 18, 2024, at his residence.
He was born on December 26, 1945, to Julian and Mary (Parkman) Slay in Quitman, MS.
John served in the Army National Guard and the Army Reserves and retired at the rank of Major in 1989. He was a graduate and avid fan of Mississippi State University. John enjoyed his hobby of going to auctions. John was a loving husband, father, and grandfather that enjoyed spending time with his family.
John is survived by his wife, Glenda Riley Slay; sons, John Steven Slay and Shaun Parkman (Cheryl) Slay; daughter, Leigh Ann Slay; four grandchildren, Hunter (Chasity) Meadows, Ryleigh Meadows (Michael Murray), Brianna Moore, and Nathan Moore; three great-grandchildren, Maci Kittrell, Lawson Meadows, and Kane Meadows; sister, Jane (Doyle) Freeman; four sisters-in-law, Carolyn Slay, Peggy (Gene) Martin, Connie (Jimmy) Welch, Donna (Jimmy) Hamrick; brother-in-law, Gary (Stacy) Riley; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his father, Julian Lawson Slay; mother, Mary "Parkie" Slay; grandson, John Devin Meadows; and a brother, J.L. "Sonny" Slay.
Visitation was held Friday, March 22, 2024, 10:00 a.m. at Wright's Funeral Home, Quitman, Mississippi.
Funeral services were held on Friday, March 22, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Wright's Funeral Home with Rev. David Manasco and Rev. Gary Morris officiating.
Burial took place in the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 22, 2024.
Pallbearers were John Steven Slay, Shaun Slay, Hunter Meadows, Nathan Moore, Michael Murray, Jody Combest, Dewayne Hamrick and David Riley.
