WICHITA, Kansas – No. 2 Jones College Jones got the three points it was looking for on Monday on Day 1 of the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.
Both teams came in with long winning streaks. Jones had won 14 straight, Northeast (Nebraska) a dozen in a row. Neither got the win, but both kept their unbeaten streaks going with Monday's 1-1 double overtime draw.
Things got off to a rocky start, with JC allowing a goal just 2:08 in, but the Bobcats found the equalizer from Kendyl Terrell (Hattiesburg) in the 51st minute and outlasted No. 18 Northeast in penalty kicks to take the lead in Pool B play.
Jones trailed at the half for the first time all season, 1-0, but scored six minutes into the second half to level the match at 1-1.
The Bobcats dominated on the stat sheet, outshooting the Hawks 22-3.
Tied after 90 minutes and another 20 in a pair of scoreless overtime periods, the match went to penalties.
Both teams made their first four kicks, before a Northeast miss wide left in Round 5 opened the door. Keona Crowell Keona Crowell (Forrest County AHS) then drilled it lower 90 to give Jones a 5-4 win and three points.
Jones gets a day off Tuesday before returning to the pitch Wednesday at 1:30 to face 10th-ranked Muskegon (Michigan). A win on Wednesday would advance the Bobcats to the national semifinals on Friday.
