Funeral services for Mr. John D. Pruitt, age 79, of Gilbertown, AL, were held at 11:00 a.m., Sunday, August 15, 2021, from the chapel of Phillips Funeral Home in Gilbertown, AL, with Reverend Michael Boutwell officiating. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service. Interment followed in the Antioch Cemetery in Quitman, MS.
John D. was born November 1, 1941, in Quitman, MS, to William and Illa Pruitt. He started his own logging crew when he was 14 and logging became his lifelong occupation. He was a member of Gilbertown Masonic Lodge #751 and a charter member of Hebron Hunting Club. He loved to deer hunt and spend time with his family and grandchildren. John D. passed away Friday, August 13, 2021, at his residence in Gilbertown.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Coody Pruitt of Gilbertown, AL; sons, John David Pruitt (Kaye) of Needham, AL and Bobby Pruitt (Jeannie) of Matherville, MS; daughter, Cynthia Inez Pruitt of Gilbertown, AL; brothers, Earl Pruitt (Nell) of Ararat, AL and Jake Pruitt (Jean) of Theadville, MS; sisters, Lilly Smith of Lucedale, MS and Hazel Bonner (Carl) of Theadville, MS; grandchildren, Heather Whitaker (Yancy), Amanda Tyson (Daniel), Jonathon Pruitt, Joshua Pruitt, Brandon Pruitt, Nathan Pruitt, and Kensey Pruitt; and great grandchildren, BreAnna Tyson, Emma Tyson, Kameron Pruitt, and Covey Mc. Whitaker. He was preceded in death by his father, William T. Pruitt; mother, Illa Roberts Pruitt; brothers, Roy Pruitt and Harvey Pruitt; and sisters, Helen Pruitt and Earline Allen.
Serving as pallbearers were Lance Pruitt, Brandon Pruitt, Nathan Pruitt, Daniel Tyson, Yancy Whitaker, and Tyler Abston. Honorary pallbearers were Jonathon Pruitt and Joshua Pruitt.
