The SEC rolled this past weekend as the conference was 10-0 against outside opponents. Arkansas won a thrilling double overtime contest against TCU to highlight the out of league games. Tennessee roared back to down Virginia Tech before the largest college football crowd ever at the Bristol Motor Speedway. Alabama, Ole Miss, Auburn, LSU, Missouri, Vandy and A&M all won in convincing fashion. Georgia played with little emotion, and it almost cost them in a 2-point win over Nicholls State. In conference games, Florida and Mississippi State registered important wins.
This week brings us four key conference games. Alabama vs. Ole Miss, A&M vs. Auburn, Georgia vs. Missouri and Mississippi State vs. LSU. The out of league games are not too exciting. The best might be the Vanderbilt at Georgia Tech contest.
Nick Saban did not look happy in the final minutes of the Crimson Tide’s win over Western Kentucky. Saban says he saw a lot of things his team needs to clean up before facing Ole Miss. The Tide has a true freshman quarterback in Jalen Hurts, and he is the real deal. Ole Miss will have to run the ball to protect their senior quarterback Chad Kelly. This game will bring out the best in the Rebels as this will be the largest crowd in Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium history. Ole Miss 20, Alabama 13.
Mississippi State played with a lot more emotion this past Saturday, and it produced the results that Dan Mullen wanted. State might have found Dak’s heir apparent in Nick Fitzgerald as he ran for a school record 195 yards. Fred Ross is another real threat for the Bullies’ offense. LSU also might have found their missing link at quarterback in Danny Etling. The difference in this game, to be played in Baton Rouge, will be LSU’s best weapon--Leonard Fournette. LSU 31, MSU 17.
USM dominated Savannah and this week will host a very good Troy team. Nick Mullens will need another top-notch effort for the Eagles to win. USM 34, Troy 26.
Texas A&M 27, Auburn 17; Georgia Tech 20, Vanderbilt 10; Missouri 21, Georgia 17; Arkansas 40, Texas State 7; Florida 49, North Texas 3; Kentucky 20, New Mexico State 14; East Carolina 23, South Carolina 20; Tennessee 42, Ohio 20.
The Scribe did outstanding, going 11-1 last week. He only missed on the Arkansas-TCU game. The Scribe is now 21-4 over the opening two weeks.
