Week 6
In SEC play, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, LSU and Texas A&M all won league games last week. Ole Miss, Auburn and Arkansas posted big wins in non-league matchups.
The take from week 5
Alabama, Texas A&M and Tennessee are the only unbeaten teams remaining. This week the Aggies will host the Vols, so after the half-way point of the season, we will be down to two perfect teams.
The best game as far as excitement had to be the Tennessee miracle win over Georgia in Athens last Saturday. Tennessee scored with no time left on a “Hail-Mary” after the Bulldogs had scored with ten seconds to play on a long pass play.
BETTER TAKE NOTICE GAME: LSU’s new head coach Ed Orgeron promised to tweak the offense, and boy did he. The tweaking led the Tigers to a 42-7 win over Missouri. Coach O in his debut game replacing Les Miles set a school record on offense as that unit rolled up 634 yards.
Alabama dominated as expected against Kentucky while Florida struggled against Vanderbilt before escaping Nashville with a 13-6 win. A&M went into South Carolina and went through the motions. The Aggies have Tennessee at home this week before heading to Alabama.
This week, Bama travels to Arkansas, LSU goes to the Swamp, and Auburn travels to Starkville. Kentucky will play host to Vanderbilt while Georgia will sneak over to South Carolina. Ole Miss and Missouri have the week off. The Rebels found a ground game in their Memphis win. OM will travel to Arkansas and then to LSU when they return to action.
In a game that might decide who finishes in the cellar in the SEC West, Mississippi State will host Auburn. It is Auburn’s first road game of the year. MSU has won two straight over the Tigers. Look for the Bullies to pull out a close one at home, 24-20.
Nick Mullens passed for a school-record 591 yards and four touchdowns, while junior receiver Allenzae Staggers caught six passes for a single-game record 292 yards and three scores as Southern Miss overwhelmed the Rice Owls, 44-28. USM rolled up a record 702 yards total offense. The host Roadrunners plays well at home. USM 38, UT-San Antonio 28.
