Clarke County celebrated Loyalty Day on the courthouse lawn on May 1.
Loyalty Day originally started as Americanization Day and was first observed in 1921. Things changed a little on May 1, 1930, when about 10,000 Veterans of Foreign War members staged a rally in New York’s Union Square to promote patriotism.
On July 18, 1958, May 1 was officially declared as Loyalty Day in order to foster loyalty and love of the country. Each year, the President is requested to issue a Proclamation regarding the day, and different organizations hold celebrations for the event.
In order to celebrate, the VFW held a celebration where guest speaker, Pastor Ervin Mooney, opened in prayer and gave a brief speech discussing the sacrifices made for the country to be what it is today and the importance of loyalty.
