FINAL REPORT
OF THE MAY 2026 GRAND JURY
CLARKE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI
We, the Grand Jury of the May 2026 Term of the Circuit Court of Clarke County, Mississippi, taken from the body of good and lawful men and women of said County and State, present this our report of investigations and recommendations.
We were in session for one (1) day and examined six (6) witnesses; returned thirty (30) true bills of indictment to open Court; and returned five (5) no true bills.
CLARKE COUNTY JAIL
The Grand Jury toured the Clarke County Jail and makes the following recommendations:
* Broken security cameras need to be repaired and additional cameras should be installed for maximum coverage of inmates.
* More storage is needed in the jail.
* The shower in the booking area of the jail needs to be repaired as there are broken, dirty tiles and exposed water pipes.
* The kitchen area was not clean; the ice machine filter was dirty and needed to be replaced.
*Cell windows were dirty and there were mattresses on the floor.
*There were sheets hanging in the cells which impeded the jail staff's ability to monitor the inmates.
*The paper towel dispensers were empty in the public bathroom areas.
*Locks on the cell doors need to be replaced, preferably with a system that would track all entries and exits from the secure areas.
*The damage noted by prior grand jurors to the retaining wall is still in need of being repaired.
Respectfully submitted this on the 18th day of May 2026.
