As of December 31, the SR1 College Preparatory and STEM Academy in Canton will cease operations.
At the end of the year the SR1 College Preparatory and STEM Academy will be forced to shut its doors due to the revocation of its charter contract by the Mississippi Charter School Authorizer Board.
That announcement came Tuesday morning from the Board.
The school opened in Canton in 2023, offering instruction for students in kindergarten and first grade. It later added instruction to children up to fourth grade.
Reasons for revoking the contract included failure to “meet or make sufficient progress toward its charter contract performance expectations” and financial woes.
A hearing on the matter was held in May, with the final revocation order being made by the Authorizer Board on Monday.
“The decision rests on the financial performance and internal control evidence in the hearing record, including the school’s annual financial audits,” the Authorizer Board cited.
Students and staff will finish out the fall semester, with the official date of closure set for December 31, 2026, at midnight. That means the school will not offer instruction or be operational during the spring of next year onward, “absent a subsequent lawful Board action or court order.”
“MCSAB will oversee the school’s closure process in accordance with applicable law, policy and contractural requirements to ensure an orderly transition for students, families and stakeholders,” the Board noted.
