COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) — In the spring of 1966, Laverne Greene-Leech, along with her best friend, Diane Hardy, and Barbara Turner Bankhead had just graduated from Hunt High School, where Black students attended the segregated school system in Columbus, Mississippi.

Mimi and I had a hometown friend who we hadn’t seen in a while. We wondered where he had gone. One day when we bumped into him in Jackson we asked if he had a minute for a cup of coffee and a catch up. He told us that he had taken the job of a lifetime. His job was to prepare areas in Peru for missionary groups to come over and do their work.
