Lifelong resident of Stonewall Jackie McHenry makes 85 years this week.
He grew up in Stonewall in the 1940s and 50s enjoying all the outdoor activities Clarke County has to offer. He graduated from Stonewall High in 1959 where he played three sports under Coach McKee and received the Most Valuable Player Award that year. He was a pitcher/catcher for the baseball team, halfback/cornerback/punter on the football team, and point guard for the basketball team.
He has been a church and community servant most of his life, taking on such roles as Sunday school teacher, along with deacon, alderman, and mayor.
He worked faithfully for Burlington Industries for 35 years while tending to 50-80 head of cattle for many years.
One of his biggest accomplishments, if you ask him, was winning the two big trophies in the Tri County baseball league back in the summer of 1984. That team, pictured below, won the regular season and tournament championship trophies, edging out Martin (Collinsville) in a 4-3 inning cliffhanger at the Stonewall field for the postseason tournament trophy. When asked how he like coaching Stonewall baseball, he said, “I think I enjoyed it more than the boys did.”
A get-together is planned for all former players of Mr. Jackie at Long’s Fish Camp after church this Sunday, March 22, at 12:00.
