Nellie Sykes, 90, of Quitman, Mississippi, passed away on January 27, 2025, at Baptist Anderson Hospital in Meridian, MS.
She was born on February 20, 1934, to Forrest and Onie (May) Ryals.
Nellie retired from Quitman Knitting Mill after 34 years where she worked as a seamstress. She was a member of the Quitman Church of Christ. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother that enjoyed spending her time with her friends and family.
Nellie is survived by her two sons, Richard Sykes and Donald (Sybil) Sykes; three daughters, Karran (Cleveland) Dickerson, Robin (Austin) Dickerson, and Iris (Jimmy Ray) Downey; eight grandchildren, Joni (Michael) Posey, Bodie (Penny) Dickerson, Amy Price, Wesley Dickerson, Travis (Hillary) Dickerson, Alex (Macie) Dickerson, Cricket (Paul) Brown, and Anna (Jeff) Jones; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Frances Jones and Barbara Vega; brother, Billy (Carolyn) Ryals; and several nieces nephews, and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her father, Forrest Leslie Ryals; mother, Onie May Ryals; husband, Thomas Richard Sykes; grandson, Russell Eugene Dickerson; three sisters; and three brothers.
Visitation was held Thursday, January 30, 2025, 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at Church of Christ (Quitman), Quitman, Mississippi.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 30, 2025, 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Christ (Quitman) with Mark Hudson officiating.
Burial took place in the Archusa Memorial Gardens.
