Starting on July 1, the State of Mississippi is releasing new tag options for people to attain.
One of the new options is the new blackout tag created by House Bill 446 and was passed in both Mississippi chambers and signed by Governor Tate Reeves. Part of the proceeds from the tags will go towards the State Law Enforcement and Firefighters Death Benefits Trust Fund.
“They are a new option that is available starting July 1 from the Department of Revenue,” explained Clarke County Tax Collector Hope Herrington. “They are only available in vanity, and the proceeds benefit the Law Enforcement and Firefighters Death Benefit Trust Fund.”
The tags will cost $53 in addition to the cost of the rest of the tag stuff, plus a $5.40 mail fee. There is also an extra $10 fee for anyone who chooses to renew their tag before their tag is actually due.
“If your tag is due in July and you decide you want the blackout tag, you would not pay that additional $10,” explained Hope. “If it’s due at any other time than the month you are coming in to renew, then you have to pay that extra $10 fee.”
The tags must be ordered, so those who purchase it must pay the fees to the tax collector office at the courthouse, and the tag would be mailed to the owner from the Department of Revenue.
