Quitman, MS – City of Quitman officials and the local Smart Growth America Team will meet with representatives from Smart Growth America on December 13 and 14, 2016 as part of a free, grant-funded technical assistance program. This workshop will provide the community with tools and strategies to help small communities understand how to plan for and manage growth in a regional context. The workshop will also provide Quitman with a Fiscal Impact Analysis, which uses Quitman’s own data to determine the cost of different development patterns.
Mayor Fulton is quoted as this program will benefit our city in moving forward with growth and job creation. Primary focus is on the downtown corridor and "Ma & Pa" businesses. We are fortunate to have former Mayor John Robert Smith coming, who is co-chair of T4America and policy advisor for Smart Growth America. We also have Chris Zimmerman coming, and he has an impressive resume in economic development and community design.
Quitman area residents are invited to join the workshop’s first day for an introductory presentation on regional planning for small communities. The event will be held December 13, 2016 at 6:00p.m. at the Quitman Depot on Railroad Avenue.
The program, made possible through a five-year Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities grant to Smart Growth America from the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Sustainable Communities, seeks to develop local planning solutions that help communities grow in ways that benefit families and businesses, while protecting the environment and preserving a sense of place.
