Mayor of Shubuta
• What year did you become mayor?
I became mayor on July 1, 2017.
• What are you responsible for in your position?
I apply for grants to help the town and carry out the requests of the board.
• What has changed since you’ve taken office?
Since I’ve taken office, we’ve had different projects. We’re in the process of redoing the sewage lines, which is very important. We’re also working on a drainage problem the town has. I’ve applied for a large grant to help fix the drainage problem and hope that we will be awarded that grant. We have tried to keep the town clean and are currently working on renovating city hall.
• What is the hardest part of your job?
It’s really not all that hard. It’s hard to schedule special meetings with the board sometimes because we have to schedule a time where the majority can be present.
• What are your future plans for the town?
I would like to be able to get some more businesses in town, especially a grocery store. I would really like to see a grocery store come to town.
• What do you love the most about the town?
I love the people and the freedom. It’s not a bad town. I’ve been here all my life. I just love the town. It’s peaceful, quiet, and it has good people here.
• Family
I have a wife, Gloria, and daughter, Cher. I have two grandsons. I also have two brothers and three sisters.
