County supervisors took two bids under advisement Monday morning for the demolition of the USA Fabrics Building – the former Quitman Knitting Mills. The two bids received were from Bell Demolition for $47,650 and Bulldog Demolition for $926,182.
A motion was approved to take the bids under advisement. The board has been working to have the building demolished because of the dilapidated condition of the building. Once a bid has been accepted and approved an approximate estimate of time to demolish the building and remove the debris could take over six weeks to complete. We will update you as things progress with this project.
In other business, the board went into executive session to discuss a lawsuit filed by BTH concerning the disputed appraisal of ad valorem taxes of BTH. The board approved to hire Richie Norris to represent the county regarding the lawsuit.
BTH is disputing the assessment of new equipment which was valued by the county at $45 million.
One bid was received and approved for the purchase of an outdoor warning siren by Precision Communications at a cost of $22,894.10, which will be paid from a Hazardous Mitigation Grant. The warning siren will be placed at the Shubuta VFD.
Another bid was received and approved for the purchase of two new dump trucks for the county road department. The bid approved was from Tri State Mack at a cost of $130,871.04 per truck.
Three fire departments in the county (Beaverdam, DeSoto and Shubuta) was the recipient of an equipment grant awarded through the Mississippi Forestry Commission. Fire Coordinator Eddie Ivy will inform the supervisors as to the amount and equipment once that information becomes available.

approved the re-hiring of Tenisha Hall as a part time dispatcher in 911
approved the final resolution of ad valorem exemptions for Progressive Pipeline, BTH (previous agreement separate from the above mentioned litigation) and Pine Belt Processing
approved the transfer of $44,485.87 from general county special fund to general county fund

Acknowledged a letter from Carla Gable requesting budget for 4H
Acknowledged a retirement letter from Beth Fleming
Approved the holiday of Veteran’s Day on Friday, November 11th
Approved the transfer of Laporshe Jones from the e911 Addressing office to the county administrator’s office at $12.00 per hour to replace Beth Fleming
The board of supervisors meets the first and third Monday of each month in the courthouse annex board room at 9 a.m. All meetings are open to the public.
